Birgit Maertins

  • Born in 1960 in Altlandsberg near Berlin
  • Grew up in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg
  • Married with four adult children and five grandchildren

My creativity with colours was inspired very early on by the artwork of my grandfather, the local painter Max Maertins from Neuenhagen. But it was in 2014 when I found the time to reflect on my artistic roots that I finally discovered my own creative path.

Passing on art to the next generation
  • My paintings are mainly created in acrylic and oil but I am constantly expanding on this classic base by experimenting with various materials and surfaces by producing collages. I am constantly interchanging ideas with other artists, face to face and online, and these interactions give me inspiration for new ideas and techniques. I allow myself to be guided by the magic of colours and by my moods. In 2019 I moved to a finca that offers me enough space to work comfortably and the surrounding nature in all its abundance regularly invites me to surprising encounters and amazing observations.

  • The painter and sculptor, Ernst Leonhardt from Berlin and the exceptional artist, Axel Kentsch in Es Carritxo/Mallorca both exerted particular influences on me during this early stage. I spent many hours at Axel’s side in his studio exchanging ideas with him about the “real seeing” and art and colours. Eventually, under his guidance as his first student, I practised my own first designs and painting projects.

One of the most important aspects of art for me is the ability to see – not only for the artist, but also for the viewer. Our senses are almost dulled by the flood of images we are exposed to every day. But if you relax, take your time to look at a painting without distraction and let what you see flow through your consciousness you will leave the experience with great impressions and feelings.
